Coffee is arguably the world’s most popular hot beverage. It has various positive effects on the human body due to caffeine, a substance found in coffee. While one can’t deny the benefits of drinking coffee, many are concerned about the side effects it has on the human body. More specifically, whether or not coffee is a diuretic.

The effect of Caffeine on your Body

Caffeine is known for giving your body a boost, however, it is considered to be a diuretic, a substance that can cause your body to produce more urine.

Caffeine can have a dehydrating effect on your body when it is not consumed in moderation. While caffeine is mostly known for having an effect on the brain, it also increases blood flow to your kidneys. With increased blood flow, your kidneys will release more water through urine. With more urine being passed, coffee may have a dehydrating effect on your body.

How much Caffeine is there in Coffee?

Well, it depends on the type of coffee that you drink. Certain types of coffee have less caffeine than others and may affect your body’s hydration differently. Let’s have a look at some examples:

  • Brewed Coffee: 70 – 140mg caffeine per cup (240ml)
  • Instant Coffee: 30 – 90mg caffeine per cup (240ml)
  • Espresso: 60mg caffeine per shot (50ml)
  • Decaf Coffee: up to 7mg caffeine per cup (240ml)

Does Coffee Dehydrate you?

While coffee does have dehydrating effects on your body, it is unlikely that it will dehydrate you. The benefits of drinking coffee are directly linked to the amount that you consume and the amount of caffeine in the coffee, and this is also true when we look at the side effects associated with drinking coffee.

It is generally safe to drink up to 5 cups (240ml per cup) of coffee per day. With such a small amount of caffeine, it is unlikely that your favourite brew will dehydrate you. However, when you consume an exorbitant of coffee, then it will affect your body’s hydration.
